The subjects of most of my paintings come from reading the daily newspaper, something I do from cover to cover every day, ever since I can remember.
When the first stories appeared in the national press about the missing women of the shabby east side of Vancouver in January 2002, I was struck by the graceful long neck of Mona Wilson who was last seen in November 2001.
I painted what I saw, her neck. By the time I had finished her portrait, she grew on me as it were. I wanted to know more about who she was. Finding out who she was and capturing it on canvas led me to the other women, prostitutes and drug addicts who like her simply disappeared without a trace.
